How to Identify and Fix Radiator Coolant Leaks Early

How to Identify and Fix Radiator Coolant Leaks Early

A small coolant leak can turn into catastrophic engine damage in a matter of weeks. Most riders and drivers ignore the early warning signs until steam pours from under the bonnet or the temperature gauge climbs into the red zone. By then, the head gasket may already be warped, and repair bills multiply.

The first clue is often a sweet smell near the front of your car or bike, especially after a long ride. That's ethylene glycol vaporising from a slow drip. Check the ground under your vehicle after it has been parked overnight. A fluorescent green, pink or orange puddle indicates coolant, not water. If you spot it, do not ignore it.

Next, inspect the radiator cap, hose clamps and the rubber hoses themselves. Heat and vibration cause hoses to crack at the bends, and clamps loosen over time. Even a pinhole leak will allow pressure to drop, which in turn raises the boiling point and leads to overheating under load. Tighten loose clamps and replace any hose that feels spongy or shows surface cracks.

The radiator core itself can corrode from the inside if the coolant has not been flushed in years. Old coolant becomes acidic and eats through the aluminium fins. Hold a torch behind the radiator and look for wet streaks or white mineral deposits. Those are exit points for pressurised coolant.

If the leak is coming from the water pump shaft seal or the thermostat housing gasket, you will need a professional diagnosis. These components sit deep in the engine bay and require proper tools and torque specifications.

At Motofy Garage, we pressure-test the cooling system, locate the exact leak source, and replace damaged hoses, clamps or gaskets using OEM-grade parts. For superbikes and performance cars, we also flush the system and refill it with the correct coolant mix to restore thermal efficiency.

Ignoring a coolant leak does not make it cheaper. It makes it dangerous. Book a cooling system inspection at Motofy Garage today and keep your engine running at the temperature it was designed for.
