How to Identify and Fix Uneven Tyre Wear on Your Vehicle

Uneven tyre wear is one of the most overlooked issues that silently drains your wallet and compromises safety. Whether you ride a superbike through Jaipur's highways or drive daily through city traffic, your tyres tell a story about your vehicle's health.

Camber wear appears as excessive wear on one edge of the tyre, inner or outer. This indicates misaligned suspension geometry. If you notice your tyre is bald on the inside while the outer tread looks fresh, your wheel alignment is off. Left unchecked, this kills a tyre in half its expected life and affects handling precision, especially critical on superbikes during cornering.

Cupping or scalloping creates a wavy, uneven surface across the tread. Run your hand across the tyre surface—if it feels like a washboard, you have cupping. This is caused by worn suspension components, imbalanced wheels, or incorrect tyre pressure. On motorcycles, this manifests as vibration at certain speeds and reduced grip confidence.

Centre wear happens when the middle of the tyre wears faster than the edges. This is a direct result of chronic over-inflation. Many riders pump tyres hard thinking it improves fuel economy, but it reduces the contact patch and accelerates centre tread loss. Always follow manufacturer-recommended pressures, and check them cold.

Edge wear on both sides with a healthy centre indicates under-inflation or aggressive cornering beyond the tyre's design limits. For superbikes, this can also signal that your riding style has outgrown your tyre compound choice.

Feathering shows as smooth wear on one side of each tread rib and sharp edges on the other. This is toe misalignment—your wheels point slightly in or out instead of straight. It creates a scrubbing action that eats rubber fast and creates a rhythmic hum while driving.

At Motofy Garage, we measure tread depth across multiple points, inspect suspension components, correct wheel alignment and balancing, and recommend the right tyre pressure and compound for your usage. Catching uneven wear early saves thousands in premature tyre replacement and prevents suspension damage.

Inspect your tyres every fortnight. Look for patterns, feel for irregularities, and measure tread depth with a gauge. Your tyres are the only contact between your vehicle and the road—treat them with the attention they deserve.
